All the information you need for your reptiles, amphibians, tarantulas, scorpions and other exotics. Uromastyx geyri 1. Lives 2. 0+ years Not for beginners Adult needs 5. Kept at 8. 5. The Saharan uromastyx is found in rocky, semi- arid habitats in North Africa, its range includes parts of Algeria, Mali and Niger. Uromastyx species in general should not be considered a pet for beginner reptile keepers due to their rather complex dietary and environmental requirements. Though their popularity has increased since they were first introduced to the pet trade, many specimens found in pet shops will be wild caught and may take time and effort to acclimate to life in captivity. It is possible to find captive bred uromastyx, but most of these will come from experienced breeders. When kept properly, uromastyx lizards can make beautiful and fascinating pets. Unlike many other reptiles, uros are diurnal. Temperament. Uromastyx tend to be rather shy lizards who will spend much of their time hidden away in a burrow or provided shelter. Though fairly docile and easy to handle, they will sometimes thrash about when picked up and very young animals may be quite skittish. Frequent handling will make for a more tame pet, but in general, spiny- tailed lizards do not seem to enjoy human interaction and should be thought of as more of a display animal to be handled when necessary. Though biting is very rare, uromastyx can and will do so if they feel threatened or unable to escape an uncomfortable situation. Spiky tails and sharp claws will also be used for defense. Housing. Ground space is more important than height in a uromastyx enclosure. Custom built terrariums or glass aquariums both work well for housing your pet and since the uromastyx does not club, screen tops are really not necessary. Hatchlings can live in groups in 2. Never keep two adult males in the same enclosure. Substrate can be sand, granulated cork bark, crushed walnut or a similar substrate. Newspaper also works well and is very easy to clean. Be sure to spot clean your uromastyx enclosure frequently. Rocks and driftwood are recommended for interior decor and a hide box or cave of some sort should be provided to ensure that your pet feels safe and comfortable. Heating & Lighting. Like most uromastyx species, the Saharan uromastyx comes from a very hot environment and in order to have a happy, healthy pet, you will need to replicate this environment as closely as possible in their enclosure. Guide to lizard taxonomy to help identify lizards, lizard classification and description for families and lizard species, with a list of all types of lizards. All Spiny- tailed lizards requite UV lighting absorb vitamin D and make use of the other minerals and vitamins in their diet. A 1. 0% UVB fluorescent bulb is recommended. Your pet will also need a basking spot provided by some rocks or driftwood placed under a heat lamp. The temperature of this basking area should reach between 1. Lights should be can be turned off at night provided the enclosure temperature does not drop below 7. Humidity levels must be kept very low. Feeding. All uromastyx lizards are primarily herbivores and should be fed a diet of chopped up leafy greens and seeds. Collard greens, endive, alfalfa, cactus pad and dandelion greens should be considered staple foods, but other fruits and vegetables will also be accepted and can be offered in moderation. Spinach, beet greens, Swiss chard, cabbage, broccoli and kale should be avoided as these have been know to cause metabolic problems. Various types of small bird seed such as finch food will also be readily accepted. Though there is much debate over the benefit of occasional insects in the diet of spiny- tailed lizards, many keepers will offer crickets once a month. Too many insects will eventually be fatal to your pet as they are unable to process large amounts of protein. Be sure to sprinkle foods with vitamin and calcium powders. Unless your pet is ill or dehydrated, water is not needed. Uromastyx are will get all of the moisture they require from their food. Additional Information. Even if you do not plan to breed your uromastyx, brumation (a form of hibernation) may still happen, during the winter months when your pet can sense a change in their usual photo period. Brumation may last from one to three months and though your uromastyx will be awake during this time, they will be far less active than usual and will consume very little or no food. This is completely normal behaviour and when ready, your pet will come out of brumation on its own. Try not to disturb them during this period of rest. Similar Species. Clinical Guidelines. Authored by a talented group of GI experts, the College is devoted to the development of new ACG guidelines on gastrointestinal and liver diseases.Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis . This stops the liver from working normally. Cirrhosis is a long- term (chronic) liver disease. The damage to your liver builds up over time. The liver is your body’s largest internal organ. It lies up under your ribs on the right side of your belly. The liver does many important things including: Removes waste from the body, such as toxins and medicines. Makes bile to help digest food. Stores sugar that the body uses for energy. Makes new proteins. When you have cirrhosis, scar tissue slows the flow of blood through the liver. Over time, the liver can’t work the way it should. In severe cases, the liver gets so badly damaged that it stops working. This is called liver failure. The effectiveness of daclatasvir based therapy in European patients with chronic hepatitis C and advanced liver disease : Safety, tolerability, and antiviral effect. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney function doesn’t fail at once. The condition, in fact, progresses over time and through stages. The success of the treatment. Chronic kidney disease is a condition affecting close to 20 million Americans. Kidney specialists (nephrologists) suggest that changing your diet can help protect. What causes cirrhosis? The most common causes of cirrhosis are: Hepatitis and other viruses. Alcohol abuse. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (this happens from metabolic syndrome and is caused by conditions such as obesity, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and high blood pressure)Other less common causes of cirrhosis may include: Autoimmune disorders, where the body’s infection- fighting system (immune system) attacks healthy tissue. Blocked or damaged tubes (bile ducts) that carry bile from the liver to the intestine. Use of certain medicines. Exposure to certain toxic chemicals. Repeated episodes of heart failure with blood buildup in the liver. Parasite infections. Some diseases passed from parent to child (inherited diseases) may also cause cirrhosis. These may include: Alpha. High blood galactose levels. Glycogen storage diseases. Cystic fibrosis. Porphyria (a disorder in which certain chemicals build up in the blood)Hereditary buildup of too much copper (Wilson disease) or iron (hemochromatosis) in the body. What are the symptoms of cirrhosis? Your symptoms may vary, depending on how severe your cirrhosis is. Mild cirrhosis may not cause any symptoms at all. Symptoms may include: Fluid buildup in the belly (ascites)Vomiting blood, often from bleeding in the blood vessels in the food pipe (esophagus)Gallstones. Itching. Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)Kidney failure. Muscle loss. Loss of appetite. Easy bruising. Spider- like veins in the skin. Low energy and weakness (fatigue)Weight loss. Confusion as toxins build up in the blood. Preventive Strategies in Chronic Liver Disease: Part I. Alcohol, Vaccines, Toxic Medications and Supplements, Diet and Exercise. A diet for CKD. The symptoms of cirrhosis may look like other health problems. Always see your healthcare provider to be sure. How is cirrhosis diagnosed? Your healthcare provider will look at your past health. He or she will give you a physical exam. You may also have tests including: Blood tests. These will include liver function tests to see if the liver is working the way it should. You may also have tests to see if your blood is able to clot. Liver biopsy. Small tissue samples are taken from the liver with a needle or during surgery. The samples are checked under a microscope to find out the type of liver disease. Your healthcare provider may want you to have imaging tests including: CT scan (computed tomography). This is an imaging test that uses X- rays and a computer to make detailed images of the body. A CT scan shows details of the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This test makes detailed pictures of organs and structures inside your body. It uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy. A dye may be shot (injected) into your vein. The dye helps the liver and other organs to be seen more clearly on the scan. Ultrasound. This shows your internal organs as they work. It checks how blood is flowing through different blood vessels. It uses high- frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues, and organs. A lighted flexible camera is placed through your mouth into your upper digestive tract to look for enlarged blood vessels that are at risk of bleeding because of your cirrhosis. If you have fluid in the belly (ascites), you may need a low sodium diet, water pills (diuretics), and removal of the fluid with a needle (paracentesis). How is cirrhosis treated? Cirrhosis is a progressive liver disease that happens over time. The damage to your liver can sometimes reverse or improve if the trigger is gone, such as stop drinking alcohol or if the virus is treated. The goal of treatment is to slow down the buildup of scar tissue and prevent or treat other health problems. In many cases, you may be able to delay or stop any more liver damage. If you have hepatitis, it may be treated to delay worsening of your liver disease. Your treatment may include: Eating a healthy diet, low in sodium. Not having alcohol or illegal drugs. Managing any health problems that happen because of cirrhosis Talk to your healthcare provider before taking prescription medicines, over- the- counter medicines, or vitamins. If you have severe cirrhosis, treatment can’t control other problems. A liver transplant may be needed. Other treatments may be specific to your cause of cirrhosis, such as controlling excessive iron or copper levels, or using immune suppressing medicines. Be sure to ask your healthcare provider about recommended vaccines. These include vaccines for viruses that can cause liver disease. What are the complications of cirrhosis? Cirrhosis can cause other health problems such as: Portal hypertension. The portal vein carries blood from your intestines and spleen to your liver. Cirrhosis slows the normal flow of blood. That raises the pressure in the portal vein. This is called portal hypertension. Enlarged blood vessels. Portal hypertension may cause abnormal blood vessels in the stomach (called portal gastropathy and vascular ectasia) or enlarged veins in the stomach and the food pipe or esophagus (called varices). These blood vessels are more likely to burst due to thin walls and higher pressure. If they burst, severe bleeding can happen. Seek medical attention right away. Ascites. Fluid collecting in your belly. This can become infected. Kidney disease or failure. Easy bruising and severe bleeding. This happens when the liver stops making proteins that are needed for your blood to clot. Type 2 diabetes. When you have cirrhosis, your body does not use insulin properly (insulin resistance). The pancreas tries to keep up with the need for insulin by making more, but blood sugar (glucose) builds up. This causes type 2 diabetes. Liver cancer. Key points about cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is when scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue. This stops the liver from working normally. Cirrhosis is a long- term (chronic) liver disease. The most common causes are hepatitis and other viruses, and alcohol abuse. Other medical problems can also cause it. The damage to the liver usually can’t be reversed. The goal of treatment is to slow down the buildup of scar tissue and prevent or treat any problems that happen. In severe cases, you may need a liver transplant. Next steps. Tips to help you get the most from a visit to your healthcare provider: Know the reason for your visit and what you want to happen. Before your visit, write down questions you want answered. Bring someone with you to help you ask questions and remember what your provider tells you. At the visit, write down the name of a new diagnosis, and any new medicines, treatments, or tests. Also write down any new instructions your provider gives you. Know why a new medicine or treatment is prescribed, and how it will help you. Also know what the side effects are. Ask if your condition can be treated in other ways. Know why a test or procedure is recommended and what the results could mean. Know what to expect if you do not take the medicine or have the test or procedure. If you have a follow- up appointment, write down the date, time, and purpose for that visit. Know how you can contact your provider if you have questions. Alcoholic Liver Disease . O’Shea, MD, MSCE1, Srinivasan Dasarathy, MD1 and Arthur J. Mc. Cullough, MD1. These recommendations provide a data- supported approach. They are based on the following: (i) a formal review and analysis of the recently published world literature on the topic (Medline search); (ii) American College of Physicians Manual for Assessing Health Practices and Designing Practice Guidelines (1); (iii) guideline policies, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Policy on the development and use of practice guidelines and the AGA Policy Statement on Guidelines (2); and (iv) the experience of the authors in the specified topic. Intended for use by physicians, these recommendations suggest preferred approaches to the diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive aspects of care. They are intended to be flexible, in contrast to the standards of care, which are inflexible policies to be followed in every case. Specific recommendations are based on relevant published information. To more fully characterize the quality of evidence supporting the recommendations, the Practice Guideline Committee of the AASLD requires a Class (reflecting the benefit vs. It may well represent the oldest form of liver injury known to mankind. Evidence suggests that fermented beverages existed at least as early as the Neolithic period (cir. BC) (5). Alcohol remains a major cause of liver disease worldwide. It is common for patients with ALD to share the risk factors for simultaneous injury from other liver insults (e. Many of the natural history studies of ALD and even treatment trials were performed before these other liver diseases were recognized, or specific testing was possible. Thus, the individual effect of alcohol in some of these studies may have been confounded by the presence of these additional injuries. Despite this limitation, the data regarding ALD are robust enough to draw conclusions about the pathophysiology of this disease. The possible factors that can affect the development of liver injury include the dose, duration, and type of alcohol consumption, drinking patterns, gender, ethnicity, and associated risk factors, including obesity, iron overload, concomitant infection with viral hepatitis, and genetic factors. Geographic variability exists in the patterns of alcohol intake throughout the world (6). Approximately two- thirds of the adult Americans drink alcohol (7). The majority drink small or moderate amounts and do so without evidence of clinical disease (8–1. A subgroup of drinkers, however, drink excessively, develop physical tolerance and withdrawal, and are diagnosed with alcohol dependence (1. A second subset, alcohol abusers and problem drinkers, are those who engage in harmful use of alcohol, which is defined by the development of negative social and health consequences of drinking (e. Failure to recognize alcoholism remains a significant problem and impairs efforts at both the prevention and the management of patients with ALD (1. Although the exact prevalence is unknown, approximately 7. Americans were estimated to meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, criteria for the diagnosis of alcohol abuse and/or alcohol dependence in 1. In 2. 00. 3, 4. 4% of all deaths from liver disease were attributed to alcohol (1. The population- level mortality from ALD is related to the per capita alcohol consumption obtained from national alcoholic beverage sales data. There are conflicting data regarding a possible lower risk of liver injury in wine drinkers (1. One epidemiological study has estimated that for every 1 l increase in per capita alcohol consumption (independent of the type of beverage), there was a 1. These data must be considered in the context of the limitations of measuring alcohol use and defining ALD. The scientific literature has also used a variety of definitions of what constitutes a standard drink (Table 2). Most studies depend on interviews with patients or their families to quantify drinking patterns, a method that is subject to a number of biases, which may lead to invalid estimates of alcohol consumption (2. Although there are limitations of the available data, the World Health Organization’s Global Alcohol database, which has been in existence since 1. The burden of alcohol- related disease is the highest in the developed world, where it may account for as much as 9. However, even in the developing regions of the world, alcohol accounts for a major portion of the global disease burden, and is projected to take on increasing importance in those regions over time (2. Table 1. Grading system for recommendations. Classification. Description. Class IConditions for which there is evidence and/or general agreement that a given diagnostic evaluation, procedure or treatment is beneficial, useful, and effective. Class IIConditions for which there is conflicting evidence and/or a divergence of opinion about the usefulness/efficacy of a diagnostic evaluation, procedure, or treatment. Class IIa. Weight of evidence/opinion is in favor of usefulness/efficacy. Class IIb. Usefulness/efficacy is less well established by evidence/opinion. Class IIIConditions for which there is evidence and/or general agreement that a diagnostic evaluation/ procedure/treatment is not useful/effective and in some cases may be harmful. Level of evidence. Level AData derived from multiple randomized clinical trials or meta- analyses. Level BData derived from a single randomized trial or nonrandomized studies. To convert concentrations of alcohol, usually listed in volume percent (equivalent to the volume of solute/volume of solution . These are not necessarily distinct stages of evolution of the disease, but rather, multiple stages that maybe present simultaneously in a given individual (2. These are often grouped into three histological stages of ALD, including fatty liver or simple steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis (AH), and chronic hepatitis with hepatic fibrosis or cirrhosis (2. The latter stages may also be associated with a number of histological changes (which have varying degrees of specificity for ALD), including the presence of Mallory’s hyaline, megamitochondria, or perivenular and perisinusoidal fibrosis (2. Fatty liver develops in about 9. Simple, uncomplicated fatty liver is usually asymptomatic and self- limited, and may be completely reversible with abstinence after about 4–6 weeks (2. However, several studies have suggested that progression to fibrosis and cirrhosis occurs in 5–1. In one study, continued alcohol use (> 4. Fibrosis is believed to start in the perivenular area and is influenced by the amount of alcohol ingested (3. Perivenular fibrosis and deposition of fibronectin occur in 4. Perivenular sclerosis has been identified as a significant and independent risk factor for the progression of alcoholic liver injury to fibrosis or cirrhosis (3. Progression of ALD culminates in the development of cirrhosis, which is usually micronodular, but may occasionally be mixed microand macronodular (3. A subset of patients with ALD will develop severe AH, which has a substantially worse short- term prognosis (3. AH also represents a spectrum of disease, ranging from mild injury to severe, life- threatening injury, and often presents acutely against a background of chronic liver disease (3. The true prevalence is unknown, but histological studies of patients with ALD suggest that AH may be present in as many as 1. Typically, symptomatic patients present with advanced liver disease, with concomitant cirrhosis in more than 5. However, even patients with a relatively mild presentation are at high risk of progressive liver injury, with cirrhosis developing in up to 5. The likelihood that AH will progress to permanent damage is increased among those who continue to abuse alcohol. Abstinence from alcohol in one small series did not guarantee complete recovery. Only 2. 7% of the abstaining patients had histological normalization, whereas 1. AH when followed for up to 1. Risk Factors. Unlike many other hepatotoxins, the likelihood of developing progressive alcohol- induced liver disease or cirrhosis is not completely dose- dependent, as it occurs in only a subset of patients. A number of risk factors that influence the risk of development and progression of liver disease have been identified. The amount of alcohol ingested (independent of the form in which it is ingested) is the most important risk factor for the development of ALD (4. The relationship between the quantity of alcohol ingested and the development of liver disease is not clearly linear (4. However, a significant correlation exists between per capita consumption and the prevalence of cirrhosis (4. The risk of developing cirrhosis increases with the ingestion of > 6. Yet, despite drinking at these levels, only 6–4. In a population- based cohort study of almost 7,0. Italian communities, even among patients with very high daily alcohol intake (> 1. ALD (5. 0). The risk of cirrhosis or non- cirrhotic chronic liver disease increased with a total lifetime alcohol intake of > 1. The odds of developing cirrhosis or lesser degrees of liver disease with a daily alcohol intake of > 3. The type of alcohol consumed may influence the risk of developing liver disease. Obesity, on its own, is a huge problem in modern societies because it is associated with diabetes, heart disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea and reproductive abnormalities. So, if you wish to lose weight and reduce your chances of getting sick, perhaps its time to start a calorie diet restriction program. Here is a 7- day meal plan that will help you to lose weight fast and be healthier. I Ate Raw Food for 2. Days and This is What Happened. Since I train Dobermans in Schutzhund it is difficult to move carrying around that much extra weight and I also really never felt very good. I ate the typical American diet and drank more alcohol than was good for me. I started the 2. 1 Day Raw Food Reset after hearing about it while doing the 3. Day Green Smoothie Challenge. I was only through half of the Challenge when I started the Reset. During the Reset, I completely eliminated coffee, diet drinks and processed foods – and have stayed clear from them since. What is most important is the way this has opened my eyes to what I put into my body, on my body, and clean my house with. I have learned without any real effort on my part to listen to my body and actually pay attention. I started walking again- first only one mile, I didn’t push it, but now I can walk 5 to 6 miles at a time. I really think that my body has figured out when it is full and it is letting me know.
